Brenthaven Edge II for Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch

Wow, I cannot rate this product enough. This is a slimline carry case for the Apple MacBook Pro. It is not a full on, carry-it-all bag, nor is it one of those tight fitting sleeves. Instead it offers just the right amount of capacity to carry your laptop with a few extra bits to that important meeting, to work, or when popping to a friends house.

The case does not actually measure much more than the 15-inch MacBook Pro itself. Rough size is about 40cm(W) by 31cm)H) by 6cm(D). On the front of the case is a smaller zipped pocket which is roughly 22cm wide by 16cm high. On the back you get a pocket that has a single velcro fastening, this one is big enough for an A4 pad of about 40 sheets. The top has a nice padded handle, which goes flat into the top of the case when not in use. There is also two metal buckles to the top sides of the case for use with the supplied shoulder strap. The strap is padded nicely and has quick release metal attachments.

The main inner of the case zips completely open around three sides. You then place your laptop into it face down. This means that your laptop lid is against the part of the case with the most padding. The flap has some rigid board in it and four rubber pads (one in each corner) that help to protect your lappie from bumps. Around the four edges are nice padded strips, and just outside these strips is yet more rigid inserts. It is a very lightweight case, but really does offer some decent protection. The styling is nice too, in black and silver, with some silver stitch detailing too.

I was using this with a new (late 2008 unibody) 15-inch MacBook Pro, which was a nice snug fit. I was very happy with just what a perfect size the padding was. The older MacBook Pro was also tested and fitted just the same.

It is readily available from various places for under £30 which I think represents great value for money. It means you can travel very easily with all that you need (apart from your power adapter), but with 4/5 hours of battery life, that shouldn't pose a problem.

U-Charge - charge your battery directly - no Magsafe

Ever since Apple introduced the new Magsafe connector to their portable line-up, there has been a big lack of accessories. This is because they will not license the Magsafe technology to third parties. This is a shame, because I think it is a fantastic feature.
FastMac have just introduced a new charger called U-Charge that does away with the problem. Instead of plugging directly into the laptop, you plug straight into the battery. It is very portable, and available for the PowerBook G3 Pismo, 12-inch iBook G3/G4, PowerBook G4 Alu, and the latest MacBook and MacBook Pro. Costing $69.95 it is well worth checking out.

Nice styling, built in handle, and cuddly padding, make this a very stylish choice. Comes complete with a "if lost' tag that has a unique identifier code, so if some finds your laptop after it is stolen or mislaid, you might well stand a chance of getting it back. The Knomo looks pretty good, for a little under $100.

Brenthaven ProLite II Review - SPACIOUS BAGIOUS!

If you look back at my preferences in bags, perhaps two or three years ago, I would never have considered a Brenthaven offering. I won't name and shame here my bag of choice, but I must hasten to say that it was sold off the back as being designed for the Mac Crowd and a lot more expensive to boot.

The ProLite II from Brenthaven is a big surprise to me on lots of counts. It looks very understated, so does not scream "Laptop" to passers-by. It fits laptops up to 15.4-inch widescreen, so was perfect for my MacBook Pro. The main compartment does not have a removable sleeve, instead it padded strips to the bottom and sides. I was happy to slip my MBPro in there without any other case, but if you are the type that wants to stops any type of scratch this is not a problem. With my 15.4-incher inside a slip case, or a corduroy padded case, or second skin, it still fitted nicely inside the ProLite II.

The good things don't end there... on the front of the bag there are three zipped compartments. One is lined in a nice soft material and would accommodate the likes of an iPod, slimline compact camera etc. The second zip down opens right up to reveal some pen pockets, mesh pockets, credit card holder and key holder. The final full length zip toward the bottom of the bag is ideal to put some cables in and perhaps a charger or two.
Round the back there is a further two compartments, large enough to fit loads of paperwork, a mousepad, and yet more mesh pockets. There is also a strap across the back, this allows you to attach the ProLite II to wheeled baggage, freeing up your hands.

Carrying this around is also pretty comfortable. The obligatory shoulder strap is nicely padded, as are the two shorter carrying handles on the top of the bag. Where the ProLite II really scores for me is in three main areas. Firstly, the build quality is really nice. Everything feels as though it will last for a very long time. Secondly, the looks... yes I know a lot of you will say it is just a plain old black bag, but I think in connection to the build quality and the stitching, it just looks really nice. The final winning point is the price... and again, I can hear you say that you could buy cheaper, but I would argue that for just under £70 you get a really useful, well designed bag that is guaranteed for life. Well done Brenthaven, you get my vote!

V-Moda Vibe Duo - posh earphones for iPhone

I have reviewed V-Moda earphones before (the Vibe earphones), so when I learnt that they had been working with Apple to produce a quality earphone/mic combo for the iPhone, I got all excited. Sure, you get earphones with the iPhone, but as per usual, we always strive to have better sound. Seeing as the iPhone is a damn good iPod too, it surely deserves the best.

The V-Moda Vibe Duo earphones will set you back just under $100 or £70 in the UK. They are available in three colour finishes, Nero black as reviewed here, chrome, and GunMetalRouge, a red metal colour. Let's get the technical bit out of the way first. These are light, weighing in at just 13g. They offer a frequency response all the way down to 12Hz for great bass reproduction, and all the way up to 22kHz for those high details. They comes supplied with various size silicone ear fittings, to ensure a comfortable fit and just over one meter in cable length. There is also a microphone built in, for taking/making calls, with a call control button for taking calls and play/forward features of the iPod part of your iPhone. You can of course use these with a regular iPod, and just not take advantage of the mic. So, if you also own an iPod, this may be a way of getting great earphones for two devices.

Down to the nitty gritty, and I am happy to say that the Vibe Duo earphones performed impeccably. For phone use, the incoming sound was crystal clear. On the other end, compared to the Apple supplied set, the microphone delivered much clearer vocals, less muddy. When listening to music the bass extension was awesome, you got a real feel of depth to the music. Vocals were warm, yet any mid-range or high-level detail was very natural. With cheaper earphones you sometimes get this mechanical nature to the music, but this was nowhere to be heard in my tests.

Apart from the sound reproduction, the comfort of the Vibe Duo earphones was brilliant. I used the medium sized silicone fittings, which gave me a snug fit. They don't fit as deep in the ear canal as some others, so I found them much more comfortable. The finishing touches that make these worth the extra spend is the detailing, quality construction, and even the neat leather case you get to pop the earphones in when not in use. If you want to treat yourself (or your ears) to some glorious sounds, then splash out on a set of Vibe Duos, it'll be money well spent.

iFold Stand - Ease the neck pain!

Matias today announced the iFold, a laptop stand that folds flat for travel. By raising your notebook to monitor height and attaching a keyboard & mouse, you get the comfort level of a desktop computer, without losing the convenience of your laptop.

"We've created an instant classic," said Vesna Vojnic, Marketing Director for Matias. "Made from beautiful black acrylic, the iFold is simply gorgeous. The folding mechanism is zinc alloy and fully visible. You can see one in person at flagship Apple Stores. It's really cool. "

"With laptops out-selling desktops, the landscape has really changed. Lots of problems that were solved in the desktop era are now reappearing. For example, displays are too low, so people are getting neck pain from looking down. Laptop keyboards are cramped and lack a number pad. Most of the products out now are not portable. In the coming weeks, Matias will be offering solutions to all these new problems," said Vojnic.

Price & Availability
The iFold is $59.95 (US) available today from the Apple Store, eCost.com, Amazon.com, and Matias.ca.
