Messenger 7 Mac Released - tell me why
Tuesday, April 29, 2008
As a long time user of Adium for the Mac, plus of course Apple's very own iChat, I left Microsoft Messenger behind a long time ago. When a new version came out, in the past, I tried it, but could never really work out where it would fit in my portfolio of applications. So I may well skip the newly released version 7.
Sure, I understand that users come from a PC background, where all their friends use Windows, but then is that not where Adium comes in. In some situations, I tell friends if they really want to communicate with me in a video conferencing scenario, to "buy a Mac". This might seem a bit extreme, but I have converted a few like that.
For those of you who use Messenger, please share in the comments, why do you use this app? and what are the invaluable benefits?

Kolobags Knomo - Carry your MacBook in style
If you are looking for something a little different (aka stylish) to carry your MacBook around in, then check out the Knomo from Kolobags. Nice styling, built in handle, and cuddly padding, make this a very stylish choice. Comes complete with a "if lost' tag that has a unique identifier code, so if some finds your laptop after it is stolen or mislaid, you might well stand a chance of getting it back. The Knomo looks pretty good, for a little under $100.

Apple updates iMac - super fast !
Monday, April 28, 2008
Apple® today updated its all-in-one iMac® line with the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors and the most powerful graphics ever available in an iMac. With prices starting at just £799, iMac includes faster processors with 6MB L2 cache and a faster 1066 MHz front-side bus across the entire line, and 2GB of memory standard in most models. The 24-inch iMac now offers a 3.06 GHz Intel processor and the high-performance NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS graphics as options, extending iMac’s lead as the ultimate all-in-one desktop computer for both consumers and professionals.
“The iMac’s gorgeous aluminium and glass all-in-one design has been an incredible hit with our customers and is just one of the reasons Mac sales are growing three and a half times faster than PC sales,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “With the latest Intel processors, a faster new graphics option and more memory, customers now have even more reasons to love the iMac.”
Packing dual-core performance into the convenience of a striking all-in-one design, the new iMac includes faster Intel Core 2 Duo processors across the line; a 1066 MHz front-side bus; up to 4GB of 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory; and a widescreen flat-panel display supporting millions of colours. For the first time, the 24-inch iMac features an optional NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS with 512MB of video memory, to deliver up to two times standard performance for graphic intensive applications*. Providing the latest in high-performance connectivity options to quickly and conveniently transfer digital photos, music and video, iMac includes built-in AirPort Extreme® 802.11n Wi-Fi networking for up to five times the performance of 802.11g**; Bluetooth 2.1+EDR; Gigabit Ethernet; built-in iSight® video camera; a total of five USB 2.0 ports (including two on the Apple Keyboard); and one FireWire® 400 and one FireWire 800 port.

Echo Mirror - Funky iPod Nano Case from Proporta
Tuesday, April 22, 2008
When something is a little on the different side, it certainly catches my attention. The Echo Mirror case for the 3rd gen iPod Nano is certainly thinking outside the box. It protects your Nano in true style. The part that covers the screen lets those colours shine through in all their glory, but when you turn your Nano off, the screen becomes a mirror. Cool... handbag goodness... this can be yours for just over £10 from Proporta.

My Switch from Boot Camp to VMWare Fusion
My platform of choice is a MacBook Pro (or Mac of some description) running Mac OS X Leopard. I just love the way Leopard is so stable and let's me get on with being creative. In some circumstances I just need to delve into Windows XP. Mainly to run my accounting software, but also my kids ask me to run little utilities and exe files they download (from trusted sites). I used to use Apple's Boot Camp, but I got really fed up of rebooting my Mac every time I needed to run Windows XP. This is where VMWare Fusion is so powerful, I can run virtual machines right within OS X Leopard, without needing to restart. It really does make life a lot simpler.
I switched to VMWare Fusion because I wanted the Best of Both Worlds.
Please check out my video and feel free to leave your comments.

Case-Mate launches new Naked cases for iPhone and touch
Tuesday, April 15, 2008
Most cases for the iPhone and touch are open-faced, so that you can use the touch screen. This is OK, but does leave the screen open to scratches. Case-Mate have announced a new case today that sounds very promising.
The Naked Case, by Case-Mate, is the only case that provides full protection of the device, including the screen while at the same time allowing full touch-through access to the iPhone or iPod Touch.
The patent-pending electrostatic membrane on the front of the case passes electrical pulses through to the device's screen, insuring that touch controls work flawlessly while in the case. Precise cutouts allow access to all other controls. The solid acrylic protects the device while allowing its true beauty to shine through. In fact, it's as if the iPhone or iPod Touch was wearing nothing at all! The Naked Case is the only case that offers 360 degree protection of the iPhone and iPod Touch. The case is available for order here.

Teach Yourself Visually Mac OS X Leopard Review
Wednesday, April 09, 2008
I consider myself a whizz when it comes to Mac OS X Leopard, so don't really like to read books. However, this book from Wiley caught my attention. It is one of many in the 'Teach Yourself Visually' range and the reason it differs from other so called Missing Manuals, is the full colour pictures. The way it is presented is superb and I learnt some new tricks too. Check out the video review for a taste of what a bargain this book really is.

We all love Apple's super slim aluminum keyboard. I personally have one and it is their best keyboard today. If you have one, grab this new firmware update.
Apple notes; This firmware update addresses an issue with the aluminum Apple Keyboard and the aluminum Apple Wireless Keyboard where a key may repeat unexpectedly while typing. The update also addresses other issues. Mac OS X 10.5.2 is required before installing this update.
The update package will install an updater application into the Applications/Utilities folder and will launch it automatically. Connect your aluminum Apple Keyboard before following the instructions in the updater application to complete the update process.
